I BELIEVE (POEM)

The day you say I was born, I believe.
The place you say I was born, I believe.
The time you say I was born, I believe.
The reason why I was born, I believe.
The love you say you have for me, I believe.
In what you say is history, I believe.
I believe, in the facts you present:
As statements, reports, news and analysis.
You say I was your thought yesterday, I believe.
You say I am your thought today, I believe.
You say I will be your thought tomorrow, I believe.
I am in search of the truth, I believe.

I believe my search will end
When I no longer am an illusion
I believe I am the truth
I believe, no matter what,
I believe i will always be alive
I believe I will always be in existence.

EMPATHY7:LOVE

“Sir, I really can’t help it. You have to share the waiting room with this gentleman from India. His flight is scheduled before yours. Then you can have the room to yourself. I really regret the inconvenience we have caused you Sir, but no one informed us of the delay of your connecting flight. I can only request you to cooperate with us for a couple of hours.” The duty officer of Universal Airlines was at his wits end trying to convince the privileged traveler from Pakistan, Lt. Major Hikmatullah, whose flight to Karachi had been delayed due to foul weather and had to wait in the waiting room with another passenger from India. The waiting room had already been booked by the Indian passenger, who was traveling from India to the Honduras via Abu Dhabi and had to spend a few hours at the airport before taking the connecting flight to his destination. With a disgruntled look on his face, Hikmatullah asked the name of the Indian passenger he had to share the waiting room with. Duty officer replied, “He is Mr. Chintan.” He then anxiously waited for Hikmatullah’s response, who merely grunted his consent while keeping his briefcase on the table and asked the Duty officer to inform him when it was time for him to board his flight to Karachi. The Duty officer nodding in consent thanked him and dashed out of the waiting room.
Hikmatullah sat down on the sofa and recalled the name of the Indian passenger the duty officer had mentioned; Chintan. It reminded him of his childhood friend Chintan. His best friend and school mate. He had lost tab of him once Pakistan and India came into existence. Could he be that friend? No, how could it be? Anyway, he should not assume anything unless he meets this person. With that thought, Hikmatullah picked up a travel journal from the side table and began flipping its glossy and colourful pages.  He looked up from the magazine when he heard the room’s door swing open and an old gentleman in khaddar kurta and pajama walked into the room, leaning on his walking stick in his right hand and holding a small suitcase in his left hand. The gentleman placed the suitcase on the floor and beside a chair and lounged on the chair. Hikmatullah cleared his throat to attract the gentleman’s attention and addressed him. “Hello, I am Lt. Major Hikmatullah from Pakistan. It’s a pleasure meeting you, Mr…”
“Chintan, I am Chintan Shyam from India, on my way to the Honduras to recuperate from TB. I am glad to meet you too Lt. Major Sir. If I may ask, were you on an official visit to this part of the world? ” The old gentleman smiled and replied to the army officer.
Hikmatullah rose from his seat, filled two tumblers with water and offered one to Chintan and sat down beside him to closely observe him and replied, “No, it was not an official visit…by jove! You are Chintan, from Lahore. You could not recognise me? I am Suleiman Hikmatullah, your neighbour from Mahasheyan da Mohalla.” He anxiously waited for Chintan’s response. Chintan looked blankly at the army officer and smiled at him. I think you have mistaken me with someone else Sir, I am Chintan Shyam from India.” Hikmatullah looked at Chintan’s hands withered with age and hard work and saw the tattoo of a flower and said. “I am sorry Mr. Shyam, if I have bothered you with my question, but could you tell me from where did you get this tattoo done?” Chintan raised his right hand and saw the tattoo at the back of his hand and said, “I do not remember. My mother must have got it done on me when I was an infant. Tell me Sir, what brought you here?”
Hikmatullah sipped water from the glass and replied, “I am returning to Karachi after visiting my daughter in London. My connecting flight is delayed due to bad weather so, I was asked to lunge here. Tell me Mr. Chintan, are you married? Does your family live in Honduras?”
Chintan sat up in the chair and replied, “I am married Sir. My family lives in India. I am visiting my nephew, who lives there.” He emptied the glass in one gulp and said, “Thank you Sir, I really needed the drink.”
Hikmatullah sat back in his chair and replied, “Mr. Shyam, we are of same age. Please do not address me as Sir. What about your wife and children?”
Chintan took a long breath and said, “Five years ago I lost my wife and we were not fortunate enough to be blessed with children. What about you Mr. Hikmatullah?”
Before Hikmatullah could assimilate Chintan’s response, he found himself replying to his question, “I am really sorry to hear about your wife, Mr. Shyam. About my family; my wife and son live with me in Karachi. My daughter has been blessed with a baby boy. So I visited them to see my grandson. You said you are visiting your nephew; do you have any brother or sister? What about your business or service back in India?” After throwing his question at Chintan, Hikmatullah keenly observed his reaction.
Chintan appeared unfazed by Hikmatullah’s query and plainly replied to him, “I am an orphan toddler wandering about aimlessly on the streets and this kind family adopted me. Their daughter is my sister and her son is my nephew. I worked as a clerk in a bank and last year I retired from service and then I was diagnosed to be suffering from bone TB.” Chintan looked at his wrist watch and with the help of his walking stick, heaved himself up from the chair. He picked up his suitcase and looked at Hikmatullah, “It is time for my connecting flight. It was wonderful meeting you Mr. Hikmatullah. I am sure you will have a safe journey back home. I wish you and your family all the very best in life.” Chintan slowly moved towards the door with the help of his walking stick and silently moved into crowd milling outside the door.
Hikmatullah stood rooted to his place, wishing against wish that Chintan would turn around and acknowledge him as his childhood friend. The flower tattoo his paternal uncle had done on his and his friend’s hand. How could he not recognise it! He wanted to tell Chintan, he and his sister owed their lives to his father, the late Mubarakchand. It was Chintan’s father, who had saved the two children from the hands of the blood thirsty mob seeking and killing all Muslims in the Hindu neighbourhood of Mahashian da Mohalla. For a week, the two siblings hid in the barn of the household. When they came out of hiding, they found the family had left the place. When they stepped out of the house, they were discovered by their paternal uncle, who had come with security personnel to rescue their family. The rest is history.  He rushed out of the waiting room to look out for Chintan, only to find the Duty Officer moving towards him.

EMPATHY6-HOPE

When Vinay and Sangita got married, their friend Chaturbhuj gave them a beautifully gift wrapped box and a asked them to open it the day they really felt true happiness since their wedding day. Days went by and the young couple’s wish of being blessed with a baby was throttled by the doctor, who told them that they could not have a child of their own. So, they decided to adopt a baby girl and complete their family.
It was a Sunday morning and Vinay was getting ready to go to the market for weekly shopping of grocery, when he heard the door bell ring. He opened the door and found his friend Chaturbhuj at the door. He welcomed him. Meanwhile, Sangita walked into the living room with their baby girl in her arms. The young couple seemed very happy to see their old friend. They asked him to stay for lunch and introduce ed him to their baby girl. Vinay then told Chaturbhuj about adopting the child to complete the family. Chaturbhuj asked them whether they had opened his gift. Vinay and Sangita looked at each other and blurted a no in unison. Vinay tried to cover up for their rather stark response, “In fact Chatur, we had forgotten about the gift.” Chaturbhuj smiled and asked them to open and see it now. Vinay went inside the house and returned with the gift. He opened it and found a photo-biography album with a hand written note in it. He picked up the note and read it aloud:
“Your loving thoughts have transformed into a beautiful life. This book will help you to keep invaluable images of the cherishable moments of the little loved one in your life. This will help you to make your dreams come true.
With love and regards,
Chatur”
The young couple was moved by their friend’s beautiful gift. They thanked him for it and promised to keep photographs of their daughter in it. Chatur simply smiled at their reaction to the gift and replied, “I am glad for both of you. You never know when your dreams may really come true as long as you believe in them.” After lunch, Chatur took leave of his friends and gifted them with yet another beautifully gift wrapped gift box and asked them to open it only the day both of them felt truly happy.
Days passed into weeks, weeks passed into months and months passed into years. A day arrived when what both Vinay and Sangita had thought to be impossible happened. Vinay and Sangita were blessed with a baby boy and it was the happiest day of their life. When Vinay returned home from the hospital, the first thing he did was to open the gift box Chaturbhuj had gifted them during his last visit. When he opened the box, he found a crystal vase and a digital photo frame along with a hand written note:
“Life is in hope. Hope is in love. Please do not place cut flowers in the vase, but a little indoor plant that can house and live happily in it. Now that your family is complete, you can always show the images of your happiness in the form of moving photographs in the photo frame.
With love and regards,
Chatur”
After a few days, Vinay and Sangita got the message that Chaturbhuj was on official visit to one of the warring nations in the Gulf region and had fallen prey to the bullets of the blazing guns in the war field. The couple decided to name their son after their friend, “Chaturbhuj”.

EMPATHY5: COURAGE

AN EXAMPLE OF CONTEXTUAL LEARNING DESIGN
The HR department of PQ Inc. had organised a session on Workplace Harassment and all the employees had gathered in the hall to attend the session. Once everyone was seated, Kumar, the H.R. Manager walked on to the stage with an elderly lady, draped in a gray coloured cotton sari and introduced her as Dr. Chaturdashi, a veteran psychotherapist, who would conduct today’s session.
Dr. Chaturdashi greeted the gathering and asked them to relax and watch a film she was going to show them. She switched on the projector and the lights in the hall dimmed while the screen on the stage came to life.  Pornographic scenes flashed on the screen making quite a few women in the audience jump up from their seat. Dr. Chaturdashi paused the screening of the film and addressed the rather disturbed gathering, “Please remain calm. This is not a pornographic film, but a narrative of an employee like you. The session is based on the narrative.” Once the gathering had settled down, she resumed the film show.

In the film, pornographic scene zooms out to show a young woman at her workstation watching the pornographic scene streamed on her screen through Facebook Messenger. The scene changes and the audience see the woman walking into the office. On her way inside the building she meets a young man, who is a sales staff of the organisation, on his way out of the office. They greet each other and he informs the woman that he is way to make field visits and sales calls. The woman walks to her workstation and places her bag at her work desk. When she switches on the computer, an intranet message flashes on the screen that It’s free internet access time and staff can login to their Facebook account too. Since, she has reached the office an hour earlier than the scheduled work hours. She logs in to her Facebook account. Immediately a Facebook Messenger Chatbox pops up and a lady, who has befriended this woman as a staff of Facebook, congratulates the woman and informs her that she has won a lottery of seventy five thousand dollars. She continues chatting with the woman on how she can claim her cash prize. At that moment yet another Messenger Chat Box pops up with a greeting from a man residing in UK. He suddenly starts sending obscene messages to the woman. The woman tries to chat with both the lady and the man. The Lady posing to be the Facebook employee asked her to deposit three thousand and five hundred dollars in the account number she had messaged her and asked her for the identification documents. The woman messaged her reply that she could not pay the amount and did not want the prize money. Meanwhile, the man had messaged few obscene photographs and streamed a pornographic video of a woman who looked and was dressed quite like her colleague she had met on her way into the office. She tried to message in defense of the integrity of the people of her nationality. She was so engrossed in doing so that she forced herself to ignore the obscene messages and pictures the man continuously messaged her. Suddenly the computer hanged and the woman heaved a sigh of relief and restarted the computer. After this incidence, many of her colleagues began making obscene gestures to her and whenever she would log in to any of the social networking sites like Facebook and WhatsApp. She was not spared even on the social networking site like LinkedIn. She often would receive unsolicited messages asking her for a date or sexual favours.  The screen blanked out and a text message flashed on it informing the viewers that after a few weeks the woman was diagnosed to be suffering from depression and she resigned from her employment.

Dr. Chaturdashi switched of the projector and discussed the narrative with the audience and encouraged them to share their experience too. Then she announced another round of film show and switched on the projector. Now most of the audience saw themselves on the screen. Most of them were screened reading the email from the HR Department they had received through LMS announcing today’s session on Workplace Harassment and fidget with an obscure link at the end of the email. Many closed the email as soon as they had finished reading it, while most of the male employees fidgeted with the link that opened a pornographic site. They spent a long time at the site and then closed it to resume work. Dr. Chaturdashi switched off the projector and resumed the discussion. She smiled and informed the audience that the objective of the second film was not to spy on the employees of PQ Inc. or to embarrass them. The objective was to study the work pattern and how many would be curious to access an unknown link and view the site linked to it. She asked the audience to share their views and comments on the film to facilitate the discussion. One of the men commented that most of the people enjoy doing on the sly such activities that are a taboo. He thought that most of the people get into such habit from their childhood days, when they stole pickle and mangoes or pinched tidbits from the refrigerator that their parents had asked them to stay away from.
Dr. Chaturdashi replied, we are always curious about the objects, activities and information that we are deliberately kept away from. We then get into habit of it. We also learn to use this as peoples’ weakness and use it to manipulate them. While doing so, we forget that if we exploit anyone, we too are invariably being exploited.
Behaviours like voyeurism, making derogatory remarks or comments, playing derogatory practical jokes, black humour, making false accusation, any vengeful act are signs of a negative mind that only hurts the owner of such a mind, but also the people he or she interacts with, especially those who differ from him on beliefs. This causes a lot of stress and friction at the workplace. That is why, the Handbook on Corporate Ethics and Workplace Harassment was enclosed with the session announcement email.
Dr. Chaturdashi then divided the audience into activity groups and asked them to make a list of reasons that prevent them from reporting any workplace harassment to the HR of the organisation or feel defeated in tackling with issues like workplace harassment.  This results in both physical and mental stress and it takes its toll on our health. Through the subsequent discussion she tried to explain why we should be courageous enough to manage workplace harassment; when necessary, report any such abuse for the good of not only ourselves but also of the abuser.
Doctor Chaturdashi then shared the following information at with the audience grouped into activity groups and facilitated further discussion on Mental and Sexual Harassment of Women and Men at the workplace and how they should tackle and when necessary, report such abuse. She also made it quite clear to the audience that no one should misuse the legal protection by filing a false report to harass any female or male colleague.

Sexual Harassment of Men

Post the discussion on the information she had shared with the audience, Dr. Chaturdashi, to finally debrief the participants on the objective of the session asked the audience, how they could avoid sexual harassment at their workplace.
One of the men replied that the best way to avoid sexual harassment is to have very clear and honest communication with the colleagues and always have the organisation’s Employee Handbook on corporate Ethics and Workplace Harassment Prevention and Reporting Guidelines and use them to both avoid and prevent harassment.
Dr. Chaturdashi finally asked the audience what was most important thing one can really do to not fall into the trap of such harassment. Then one of the women from the audience replied that we should not appear timid, helpless and gullible that anyone with negative intentions can take advantage of us. We have to make ourselves both physically and mentally strong. Dr. Chaturdashi applauded the answer by clapping her hands and the she distributed a programme sheet in the audience that announced subsequent training sessions on Self Development and Methods to Avoid and Manage Sexual Harassment at the workplace.
