Introspection (Poem)

Devotee knelt before the Divine
At the instance to worship with a prayer;
Was amazed to behold the Divine Symbol shine
 And speak to the devoted in a voice sublime.
“You, my creator kneel before me,
with what object in your heart and mind?
You pray to remind yourself through me,
 of the promise of your material success,
through my intervention divine?
You pray for yourself or for your loved ones-
 To fulfill your desire of earthly riches & pleasure,
That’s your Mother Nature’s treasure-
The cause and effect of its blatant use, is its price.
You pray for the downfall of those you loathe and despise?
Or, you pray for success in your acts of vengeance,
in the name of peace, sanctity or penance?
 to rid yourself of guilt constantly gnawing your mind.
You pray for absolution for the actions-
That brought momentary joy of triumph;
but led you to a tortuous life of damnation.
You pray giving in to your desire for status and recognition-
Is that what I should surmise?
Delve deep inside yourself
For I ask you why-
You kneel in front of your own creation,
With a prayer in a name you call mine.
With the holy trinity signifying life’s dimension:
Do you pray for harmony with the macrocosm?
Whose integral part you are in creation?
You pray to seek your fortitude,
to stoically brave  life’s challenge?
 You pray to realize your misgivings
 that prevents your harmony with the environment?
You pray to appeal to your compassionate self,
For the courage to transform jealousy and animosity,
to genuine love and empathy?
You pray to appeal to your benevolent self with the hope and optimism-
to dispel the darkness of ignorance and despair plaguing the humanity…?”

"मानव,  मेरे निर्माता होकर करते हो मेरा नमन;

A Hall of Mirrors (Poem)

I walked into a hall of mirrors;

curious to view me in them.

As I moved from one mirror to another

'for a moment, my images made me wonder,

filling me with good humour.

Gradually my images clouded my mind with gloom;

making my very being asunder.

I gently closed my eyes

dispelling the darkness engulfing my mind;

finding my real self, yonder.

The warm reassuring glow rising from my heart;

Gradually lit my eyes lifting me up

preventing me from falling apart.

Thus dispelling the darkness from my mind,

reviving my belief in

self, humanism and beings of all kinds

Reflection (Poem)

In the horizon, the sky in dusky crimson hue
Blended with the forest’s silhouette
As the dusty path led me-
Through the woods to a rivulet
To rest my life’s journey worn feet.
I perched by the stream-
Marveling at its clear waters -
Reflecting the sky’s gleam;
I bent over to look at
 My reflection in the water,
Only to find a face,
With a strange demeanor;
A face I had not seen ever.
When I observed it closely,
I found images of the ages gone by
Appear as momentary ripples
On the surface and disappear from sight.
To catch on the receding images
I held on to a thorny bush,
And leaned towards the water

But, blood trickled from
My thorn gashed hand
Into the water giving it a crimson hue;
Agony of the wound affected my view-
And I witnessed moments from history
Harrowing events of pain and misery-
That filled me with vengeance and fury.
Overpowered by such dismal feeling
I knelt on the ground and-
Unintentionally dislodged a stone;
That fell into the clear water;
And gently settled on the stream’s floor
I gazed at the concentric ripples
 The fall of the stone had caused
On the tranquil surface of the stream;
Once its surface regained its transparent gleam
I saw countless tiny grains of sand
 Reverently swirl around the stone
 Like a constellation of devotees
 Revolving around the creator’s deity
  I gazed at the star spangled sky
 And found it reflect the devout galaxy.
A gentle breeze whispered by
Through the branches of the trees nearby,
Showering their crispy yellow leaves
On the serene surface of the stream;
They appeared to me
As raft like time machines
Transporting me to my life’s cherished moments
That defined my being in the present-
My life seemed ensconced in the instant.
I saw my being reflected
 In every grain of the creation;
Making every moment of my existence
As unique and inimitable as me-
The calmness of the stream
Mirrored my inherent peace
With the truthful realisation-
I am an integral part of the creation;
Every moment of my life’s journey
Will remain as a fragment of the creation to eternity

The Snake (Short Story)
Niru was an old man who was a forest dweller. He lived in a hut all by himself. Throughout the day, he would work in the garden and crop fields close to his hut. He enjoyed a quiet and peaceful life.  Few hens and fowls from the forest used to come to his garden and field to peck on the seeds and grain. Niru built an open pen for them close to the hut.
A snake had laid two eggs in Niru’s and Niru was not aware of it. One day, while he was working in the field with his spade, he accidentally broke one of the two eggs. Crestfallen Niru covered the unbroken egg with loose earth and dry leaves. Henceforth, everyday, he would check on the egg before he would begin working in the field. One day, while checking on the egg, he found the egg shell crack and a black neonate hatch. Niru picked it up, placed it in a wicker basket and covered it with earth and dry leaves. He took it to the garden and placed it inside a hole he had dug for it. He then covered the home with dry twigs. Every day, he would collected few eggs discarded by the hens and place them in front of the hole for the snakelet to feed on. After complete his daily chores at home, when he would return to check on the snakelet’s hole, he would find the eggs gone. Niru then would smile to himself and head towards the crop fields to tend to the crops. Within a few weeks, the snakelet grew up into a snake. Niru would often find him slithering in the garden and the field.
On a winter morning, Niru got up early, while it was still dark outside. He went into the garden to pick a Neem twig to brush his teeth and inadvertently stepped on the snake that lay coiled up beneath the Neem tree.  Just as the snake hissed and raised its hood to strike at Niru, the latter jumped up and pulled away his feet from the snake. He then exclaimed, ‘Forgive me son, I accidentally stepped on you, as I could not see you in the dark. Hope I have not hurt you.’ Then the snake asked Niru, ‘Are you not angry with me? You feed me daily, yet I eat away the eggs and chicks from the pen. I have often seen you protect me from the mongoose and its children living in your garden. In spite of all that you have done for me, I did not hesitate to strike at you when you unknowingly stepped on me; yet you are apologizing to me?’
Niru replied to the snake, ‘Son, both you and I were afraid. I was afraid, even on the day I accidentally broke one of the two snake eggs I found in the crop field. I was scared coz; I was the cause of the loss of a life. That is the reason why I had picked up the unbroken egg and tended to it. I tried my best to keep you alive and safe. It was your serpentine instinct that made you prey on the chicken and eggs from the pen. I cannot ignore the fact you protected my crop fields from vermin and pests. I protected you from the mongoose because I did not want any of the beings living in the garden hurt one another. When I accidentally stepped on you, I was afraid of hurting or killing any being by stepping on it. You too were afraid when I stepped on you. Your animal instinct was the root cause of your fear of getting hurt of losing your life, which made you vengeful. You their hissed up to strike me. Son, the reason of our fear was not the same. I am glad I have not been the cause of your hurt or loss of life. ‘The snake intently listened to Niru’s response and slithered away into the forest.

देश

Inspired by the news: 3 soldiers killed in terrorist attack on Army convoy in J&K

The Forgotten Lair

With tired and cataract-foggy eyes  He stood gazing at  The lush green glade  and the arboreal stead.  It's wooden fence with a ricke...
